Whether you are exploring cottage food, prepared meals, packaged products, wholesale production, or commercial kitchen access, Altru Kitchen is developing the regional connections and educational pathways to help you understand what comes next.
Our vision
Bakers, caterers, food truck operators, packaged-food makers, meal-prep entrepreneurs, and home-based producers across Southeastern Connecticut face a common challenge: limited access to affordable, licensed commercial kitchen space close to home. Many must travel significant distances to produce legally, safely, and at a scale that supports business growth. Altru Kitchen Company is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working in partnership with Norwich Community Development Corporation to help address that gap.
Our regional community survey has now closed, and the responses are helping us better understand local demand, production needs, regulatory challenges, and the types of resources food entrepreneurs need most. Altru Kitchen is currently in predevelopment. The next phase includes reviewing survey findings, assessing feasibility, strengthening regional partnerships, developing educational workshops, and building clearer pathways for food entrepreneurs—from an initial idea to licensed production and market readiness.

Our regional community survey is now closed. Food entrepreneurs, aspiring business owners, producers, and community members shared valuable insight into the types of kitchen space, equipment, scheduling, pricing, and support services our region needs. Those responses will now guide the next stage of predevelopment, including feasibility review, partnership development, educational programming, and the planning of a potential shared-use commercial kitchen.

Our regional community survey is now closed. Food entrepreneurs, home-based producers, caterers, food truck operators, packaged-food makers, and community members shared their needs, challenges, and ideas for strengthening food-business infrastructure across Southeastern Connecticut.
Validate
We are reviewing the survey findings to better understand demand, equipment needs, preferred hours, pricing considerations, educational support, and potential locations. Working with Norwich Community Development Corporation and regional partners, Altru Kitchen will use these findings to inform the next phase of predevelopment and feasibility planning.
Advance
If the findings support moving forward, the project will advance through site assessment, operating-model development, partnership building, financing, design, and capital planning. Each phase will be guided by feasibility, community need, and the long-term sustainability of the project.
